Yorkie Care Tips

Do Not!!!!!!!!! (RATHER SAFE THAN SORRY!!!!!!)

  • Give milk!!

  • Give bones  - any kind  big or small except raw chin bone

  • Offer chunks of meat (no braaivleis!), biltong , pronutro or chicken liver!

  • Let small children pick up / play with / carry around your pup!! A pup is not a toy!!

  • Let visitors handle your puppy!

  • Lift it onto a bed and fall asleep!!

  • Ever let it go NEAR a swimming pool/ fishpond unattended!!

  • Leave the very small puppies alone at home – they stress and stop eating!!

ALWAYS

  • Have fresh drinking water and puppy pallets available 24 hrs

  • Snip hair short under the tail and plug hair out of ears

  • Deworm monthly up to six months of age – thereafter every three months get dewormer from your vet and not a supermarket!!

  • Keep puppy free from ticks and fleas with Frontline,  Biokill spray or Revolution.

  • Remember your puppy’s vaccinations – THEY NEED ALL OF THEM!!

IMPORTANT

  • Pups need plenty of SAFE toys – no choking hazards

  • Let your pup have “ cow hooves” and calcium milk bones to chew on (available from supermarkets and pet shops)

  • Puppies start changing  teeth at 4-5 months of age. It will lose the baby teeth, but for an interim it may have a double row of teeth. A vet that have a lot of yorkies experience should take out the baby teeth if they are not all out by one year of age ( the molars included)

  • Yorkies are EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO ANAESTHETIC!! Make sure your vet is aware of this and only use Diprivan (propofol) anaesthetic. If they do not take your advice, look for another vet.

  • Bath your puppy at least once a week with only no tears baby shampoo. Brush and comb often, try making a habit if you watch tv brush softly and speak softly.

DIET

At least 3 meals per day consisting of Royal Canin x-small junior pallets or you can give Royal Canin mini junior pallets for the first four weeks thereafter you can start introducing the food that you would prefer. You can also give cooked meal consisting of Basmati or brown rice, fine chopped (softly cooked) chicken breast and veggies is also good for their digestive systems development. Just remember cheap dog food is like junk food to humans! Definitely not healthy or a wise choice. If you are looking for something more affordable thats almost just as good as Royal Canin, try jock small breed puppy later on.

IF YOU PUPPY DOES NOT ALWAYS WANT THAT, GIVE HIM/HER ONLY CHICKEN BREASTS FILLETS CUT INTO SMALL PIECES. Then add some coconut oil and fresh broccoli soft with butter, it must not be dry but soggy. Pack in containers and freeze and don’t eat dog’s food for lunch!! You can also get simply chicken and cheese Vienna’s or Cesar chicken from woollies or Spar. Uncooked chicken will cause a sky high vet bill. You can give table scraps, as long as it is veggies, rice and chicken, please NO onions! ONLY FAT ALLOWED IS REAL BUTTER!!! No other meals until 7 months.

ENVIROMENT AND FOOD CHANGES WILL CAUSE DIARRHOEA 99% OF THE TIME. Give 2.5 ml KANTREXIL SUSPENSION, NOT TABLETS!! Available from pharmacies, NOT AVAILABLE from pet practices. Remember to shake the bottle before you treat your puppy. Only treat once off - this is non-systematic, but not good for kidney if you treat for days. Once in a while is ok.

THIS TREATMENT IS EFFICIENT IF PUPPY RUNS AROUND, PLAYS, EAT AND DRINKS NORMALLY.

IF OUR PUPPY HAS A RUNNY TUMMY AND VOMITS… GO TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY!!

DEWORMING

Remedies that are available for dogs normally do not give a long period of protection against worm infestations. The remedies will only kill and eliminate the current worn infection in your dog. Thus, 10 days after treatment, your yorkie can be infected again, depending on its lifestyle and contact with places where other pets “mingle”. Intervals between treatments can be as shot as one months or as long as six months. If you are uncertain of whether or not to deworm – take a stool sample to your vet for “faecal flotation” VERY IMPORTANT: THERE IS NOT ONE DEWOMRING REMEDY THAT WILL ELIMINATE 100% OF ALL TYPES OF WORMS UP TP DATE!! Please do not inoculate and deworm on the same day. Rather ask your vet for deworming tablet to give your yorkie the next day because it will clash and make the puppy very sick, ALSO PLEASE DO NOT ALLOWED YOUR VET TO VACCINATE AND RABIES ON THE SAME DAY, WAIT FOR 2 WEEKS AND TAKE BACK YOUR PUPPY FOR RABIES because it will clash as well and make the puppy very ill. If you struggle to get your puppy to swallow the deworming tablet, try putting it inside a small rolled up ball of Liver Spread.

HYPOGLYCAEMIA (LOW BLOOD SUGAR)     VERY IMPORTANT!

Exceptionally small puppies are particularly susceptible to hypoglycaemia – more commonly known as low blood sugar: this should be treated immediately. If you take your puppy to a vet, there is a change that these symptoms will be confused with Parvo Virus. (Listless, weak/ of balance, vomiting & diarrhoea). Your vet will not give the correct treatment and your puppy will die!! Please just mention it to your vet and remember the glucose content in the drip is not always sufficient for your puppy. Please make sure the vet you are using KNOWS yorkies!! Preferably never leave your puppy at the vet, they will just become more ill and will die quickly of stress due to the strange environment, chucked in a kennel and receive hardly any attention.

VERY VERY IMPORTANT -  PLEASE TAKE NOTE

Yorkie pups stress, stop eating and get diarrhoea!! If your puppy gets upset with the fact that it is not with the mother anymore, it will not always eat!! This can be very dangerous, as your puppy should not skip a meal at any stage until 4 months of age. Always keep glucose powder and a few tins HILLS A/D in the house. If your pup does not want to eat, force feed this mixture ALL AT ONCE with a syringe:

  • 2 heaped teaspoons of glucose powder in 12ml of warm water.

  • Add 2 teaspoons of hills a/d to the glucose water.

  • Force feed your puppy six times per day and twice (2) per night.

The glucose must ONLY be added if the puppy’s gums are pale, because too much sugar will result in more diarrhoea.

Remember: At 6 months their digestive systems is developed and you can start playing around with different snacks, etc. THE UTMOST CARE MUST BE TAKEN WITH YOUR YORKIE PUPPY UNTIL FOUR MONTHS!!

Do not leave your puppy home unattended, as it will not eat if it’s left alone.

Ringworm

Only use the following treatment and save you HUNDREDS OF RANDS and your puppy from a horrible ordeal. Buy SPORINOX systemic treatment that can be used for 30 days, plus 1ml per kg, available from chemists.
